Christian Volckman's Renaissance: Simply Stunning Sci-Fi Noir Animation From France

(Posted In Animation Continental Europe and Russia Film News Sci-Fi / Fantasy Trailer Alert )

renaissance.jpgOh, sweet lord ... I run the risk of diappearing completely into hyperbole here but if Christian Volckman's Renaissance has the depth to match with the absolutely stunning images then we could be looking at the world's next major piece of sci-fi animation. This thing is positively jaw dropping, people. It is however a bit of a good news / bad news scenario ...

The bad news is that I haven't been able to dig up much information on what it's actually about. It's set in Paris, 2054, and falls neatly into the fusion of sci-fi and noir that has been attempted surprisingly seldom since Bladerunner. It's a first feature from director Christian Volckman who has a previous short to his credit and the writers are listed as adapting the material, so I presume this is based on some earlier, written source, likely a comic. If anyone has any firmer information on this one I'd love to hear it.

The good news is that the scarcity of information won't bother you at all. Just go get lost in the images. Yum.

Here is hoping they are going to have some nice references to the silent Les Vampires french serial buried in there...because that is what that picture really reminds me of.

Did the woman in the trailer say something about AVALON?

From what limited French I have under my wing, the synopsis on the website says something about a beautiful, smart... (scientist?) lady, Llona Tasuiev is kidnapped. Karas, a cop, specialized in (disappearances?) goes after her. Something about why its so important to find her, something about her being a protocol for the future human, or super human, The Renaissance. Maybe she made the protocol... I could be totally wrong. I probably am. I knew I should have paid attention in French 2.

Your not far off Lola. In a nutshell that is what it says. Not a whole lot to go on, but this just hit the top of my list of must sees. Wow! And Avalon is mentioned. There are a few designs for a logo and I believe a picture of what they are referring to on the site. It's some sort of building that looks like a modern L'arc du Triomphe.

Nice.

Just checked: This is probably not an adaptation. Volckman is also artist and writer of a comic book for the film that will be released at about the same time by Casterman (see their site).

Ok, ... I^ll translate the synopsis as good as I can :

"2054. In a labyrinth-like Paris where your every move is controlled and filmed, Ilona Tasuiev, young scientist drawing attention (envied by everyone ) with her beauty and intelligence is kipnapped. Avalon, the firm Ilona worked for, puts under pressure Karas, a cop with controversial methods of proceding, specialised in kidnapping affairs, to find Ilona as fast as possible...
Karas rapidly senses a presence on his trail. He's not the only one looking for Ilona, and his followers are ready to do just about everything to bypass him.
Finding Ilona becomes vital: the young woman is a key character in an occult (that's what it actually says) war, way beyond herself. She's is the key to a protocol jeopardising the future of humanity.
The Renaissance Protocol... "

So that's the synopsis translated as precise as possible !

Actually what the female voice says in the teaser :

Beauty, longevity. Avalon, we stick with you. For life.

("For life" is the 1/1 translation: "for ever", or "for the rest of your life" would be more suited)

and it reminded me of "Sin City" somehow, anyways, looks very promising... btw, thanx for the translation Shinjuku.

To me it looks like another one of those so rare cyberpunk movies ! And I totally love cyberpunk..

Yup, very yummy visuals, very Sin City.... hope there's story to go with the looks. I'm thinking how disappointing Aeon Flux was, vs the promise of the LOOK that went with that film. Well Charlize with black hair got my pulse going anyway!

I'm not surprised it reminds you of Sin City. Sin City is a very extreme noir setting. This is a Sci-Fi Noir, so when you put one and one together, it stands to reason.
Anyways, looks very good. I should try to find it.
