Based on the Manga by Yuki Urushibara, 'Mushishi' has also recently become an Anime series, and now Mr.Otomo hopes to get the live action film ready on a budget of about a billion yen for release Winter 2006. I know nothing more than this (that's of note anyhow, unless your a fan of the stars Joe Odagiri or Ezumi Makiko), so anyone familiar with the source material care to fill me in? thinking this is the project vaguely revealed recently too, so perhaps no more animation for a while after the disappointment of 'Steamboy'.

Do you mean disappointment of Steamboy's box-office or story-telling? Even though it took a while to really get into the story, I thought it payed off quite nicely and even had a feel similar to Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind for some reason.
Hopefully Mr. Otomo will get back into animation after directing this film (unless he also excells at live action).
Otomo has already directed one Live-Action flick called WORLD APARTMENT HORROR (ワールド アパートメント ホラー). Have had a subtitled version for a while now, but haven't watched the whole thing yet. Looks interesting. Many foreigners are in it.

I have heard of the manga "Mushishi". It's published by the same company--Kodansha--who does the brilliant "Mugen no Jyuunin" (Blade of the Immortal) series. I picked up an issue of it a few years ago, but don't remember too much of it. The kanji for "Mushishi" is written as "Insect" and "Master", so it might be about an entomologist. I didn't know there was an anime series of it. I'll check the local used manga shop this week and maybe pick up an issue or two for closer inspection.
Are live-action versions of manga the new trend? The film "Ping Pong" was based on a manga, and the upcoming "The Last Love Song on this Little Planet" (Seishuu Heiki Kanojo) is as well.
I'm sure Otomo's involvement will make it a
One of Otomo's manga has also been made live-action,
its "So What?"
"World Apartment Horror" is actually a manga illustrated by Satoshi Kon ("Millenium Actress", "Tokyo Godfathers" etc).
btw, i remember a few years back someone is trying to make a live-action of "Akira"? whatever happen to that project?
Stauffen: I will really like to see your comments on "World Horror Apartment". You have the R2Jap dvd?
I've checked out two episodes now of the anime series that just started airing in Japana. I quite like it, good mood going on there. Think something like Princess Mononoke with lush forests and those strange, white thingies (can't remember what they were called) running around, which in this series are called Mushi.
The anime series probably doesn't quite capture feeling of the manga but I can imagine what the manga might be like - I think I might need to pick it up at some point. Some lovelvy scenery in the series as well, which is something I always appreciate. The anime seems to be episodic (although I've only seen to eps so far..) but it doesn't really hurt the show.
I can't imagine how they are going to turns this into a live-action feature.
I've watched the anime before. Its up to 21 episodes, i think. As i watch each epidode, i feel so enchanted by it's vast imaginary feel of the unknown. I would like to know where to buy the manga online. If there is any information, please email me at:

i've watched mushishi just recently...
it's not the usual anime that you see around...
no flashy action moves and
no perfectly good-looking characters,
and yet everything else seems so real...
a real treat for an animaniac like me...
AND Ginko to be played by joe odagiri???
wow!!! just like watching japanese version of johnny depp.
