All Aboard For After Dark ...

(Posted In Random Festival News )

adfflogo_oct05.jpgThe observant among you will have noticed a mention or two of the After Dark Film Festival around here in the past little while, but for those who haven't here's the skinny. The After Dark Film Fest is a new genre film festival that will be launching here in Toronto in the autumn of 2006. The fact that it's a genre festival in my own back yard virtually guaranteed that you'd be hearing lots about it around here no matter what but it's worth pointing out that I've just been asked to come on board as a programmer. So, for those who see conspiracy and bias around every corner here's your warning: I will be biased when I talk about this. For the rest of you: the theater's booked, I'm building a short list of films to look at, and it's going to kick ass. And, yes, I absolutely welcome suggestions of quality stuff from around the world ... we'd really like to broaden the envelope here and draw in some quality stuff from countries beyond the usual suspects.

Todd: Great to have you on board. I love your website, and I know your programming for our inaugural 2006 festival is going to rock!

Twitch readers: feel free to start sending Todd or myself your wishlists of upcoming Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror, Asian Action or Cult films you want to see on the big screen.

Fellow fantastic film fans of the world, hope to see you all in Toronto, next October (18-22). Get it in your diaries now, it's going to be a blast!

Sweet, I couldn't think of anybody better. It's crucial that genre fans embrace more unusual (dare I say artistic) entries from around the world. This is why I propose that you guys put together one or several blocks of non-narrative more avant garde inclined works. I'm thinking here of something like Karim Hussain's subconscious cruelty, angel's egg, E. Elias Merhige's begotten (oh my god that would be incredible on the big screen!). And, I'd suggest an absolute gem a little film from 1981 starring Sam Neil called Possesion. I completely fell in love with this horrific philosophical melodrama last year (it might be hard to find a print of this). As I'm in the city I'd also love to volunteer if possible.

I would love for you After Dark to secure a print to Bielinsky's El Aura.

Or try another interesting spanish/argentine (but not horror) genre effort, The Gronholm Method.

Milkpop, Kurt: Todd and I can't promise anything at this point in terms of yay or nay to any specific title, as it's early days yet in terms of getting a hold of prints. But we will add all suggestions to our rapidly expanding wish list (already at 30+ titles), and work from thereon in. FYI: to get the greatest interest in our new fest, we will be concentrating on securing hard to get international genre films, recently produced (2004, 2005, and 2006) that have not screened in Toronto, and are not available at high street retailers (e.g. HMV). As time goes on, and our fest expands in terms of days and screenings we will of course be adding retrospective screenings.

Alas, the general consensus amongst genre festivals today is that retro screenings are generally poorly attended with the DVD and home theatre explosion, and therefore form only a small part of the festivals.

P.s. Todd:
Looks like this comment list got spammed, by author "nvWcljzcga"! Yukk those links are totally not what we're going to be programming!

Adam: I've got an idea for a retro screening that would a) be cool as hell and b) bring an absolute classic film here for what I think will be the first time in North America, though I need to do a bit of research to confirm that. I know it's never been available anywhere in any format with English subtitles, though ...
