loftsmall.jpgA downloadable English-subtitled trailer for Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Loft (a.k.a. "Shi no otome") has been added to the official subsite for the movie.

Loft stars Miki Nakatani, Etsushi Toyokawa (he's also in Ryûichi Hiroki's It's Only Talk (Ittsu onrî tôku), Takashi Minamoto's Until the Lights Come Back (Daiteiden no yoru ni), and Takashi Miike's The Great Yokai War (Yôkai daisensô)), Ren Ôsugi (he's also in Taisuke Hata's Yûgen Kaisha Hikimodoshi, was in Itsumichi Isomura's Getting Off the Boat at Her Island (Fune o oritara kanojo no shima), and has been in numerous movies directed by Takashi Miike, including the satellite TV - specifically, BS Japan K.K. (K.K. BS Japan) - movies Pâto taimu tantei (a.k.a. "Onna to ai to misuterî: dai-94-kai") and Pâto taimu tantei 2 (a.k.a. "Onna to ai to misuterî: dai-146-kai")), and Noriko Eguchi (she's also in Sakichi Satô's Tokyo Zombie (Tôkyô zonbi), Shun'ichi Nagasaki's Heart, Beating in the Dark (Yami utsu shinzô), Ryûichi Honda's Ikusa, and Akira Ogata's The Milkwoman (Itsuka dokusho suru hi)).

Here's a synopsis for Loft from the official subsite for the movie: "A prize-winning writer, Leiko (NAKATANI Miki), moves to a quiet sub-urban house to finish up her new novel with a help from the editor. That night while sleeping, she sees a man in a storage room transporting an object wrapped in cloth. She soon finds out that he is a renowned archaeologist, Professor Yoshioka (TOYOKAWA Etsushi), researching ancient mummies, and that object was a recently discovered mummy. Working late on her book, Leiko witneses a ghost and finds out that her room once belonged to a woman who had been misssing for a while. This brings unexplainable fear to Leiko as she starts to uncover more stories from the past."

Loft is scheduled to be screened at the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) in early October.

So is this a ghost story or a killer mummy film? I guess in Kurosawa's capable hands I'll be happy with whatever he comes up with.

Well, that was rather unnerving. It's becoming increasingly difficult to be creeped out by Japanese horror. "Loft" looks promising.

The theme was a little creepy but the rest of it did little to interest me
