Various Comments From the Cast of 야수와 미녀 (The Beast & The Beauty)

(Posted In Asia Drama Film News Interviews )

rsbbeast.jpgYou've played a cellist in 달콤한 인생 (A Bittersweet Life), now you play a pianist in this film. Did you practice a lot for the roles?
Shin Min-Ah: To tell you the truth, I didn't practice that much for this, compared to the cello training for Bittersweet Life. But I can play a little. It needs repeated training and listening [to become a good pianist], so we couldn't do that. I hope you'll close an eye on any awkward scene in the film.

You play the 'Beast' in the film. Even though you're not a "pretty boy," you're certainly not a beast either. When offered the role, what kind of reaction did you have?
Ryu Seung-Beom: Because of the title [being opposite to the fairy tale "Beauty & The Beast"], there's a kind of bias towards the story. At the beginning of this film I thought a lot what the beast of the title really was. It's a little different than people might think, it would be better if people forgot their preconceptions about the role and the fairy tale. It's all different here.

Is there any fun anecdote from the shooting? Any particular reason for the many interesting cameos?
Director Lee Gye-Byeok: Honestly there weren't any stand-out moments. Even if she's right next to me, I've honestly been a longtime fan of Kim In-Soon. I just thought it would be fun if she came out for a few scenes in the film, but seeing everybody receive all this so well is nice. When she accepted to work with me, I felt like winning the lottery. We worked really hard to bring you a nice film.

How do you feel about playing a character with handicaps?
Shin Min-Ah: Hye-Joo is a blind person working at a Jazz Bar. Should I have faked her handicap? She can't see with her eyes, but she can feel people just like any other person able to see. I didn't really want to follow a strictly realistic model in portraying the character, because it's not a movie stressing realism over everything else.
Honestly back in school my teacher had a blind daughter. Even knowing she couldn't see, she'd keep telling me: 'You look so beautiful today' and I was really surprised. There isn't just darkness to being blind. You can see the bright side of life, too. I think the rich sense of hearing and feeling of my character has some resemblance with that kid I knew.

Since you play a Beast, didn't you think about changing your appearance?
Ryu Seung-Beom: I think you should change your approach. The small imperfections or disadvantages I have, faults other people might not see, could end up becoming a complex. That's the kind of struggle my character in the film is facing.
Personally, as I look at the mirror, I don't say "This needs to be fixed." I can see how you could ask me a question like that, since there's people in my profession who enjoy the limelight thanks to their appearance. But if we changed roles, I don't think I'd ask you such a question.
Back in Middle School we had this "Eye Charm" sticker that created double eyelids. I had friends bring it to me, and tried that once or twice...

The film opens in December.

Hmm... I've just watched the movie and I think its such a pity Insooni wasn't featured in the OST. Did she ever release a single of sorts for her song "my romance"?
The movie wasn't blow you away creative and fantastic (quite the contrary) but it is a charming movie that will steal your heart and make you break out into unbecoming giggles.. =) And the actors do a great job!

really? That's a shame. She's got such energy I always like her concerts (even though her music is not really my cup of tea). Guess there were rights problems.

I enjoy her music and she is a great performer. She's got a certain stage presence that some random teeny-bopper half her age will never ever have. *ahem* Great mood setter for the movie. Can't wait for the DVD!I think they feature Insooni

Shin Min-ah's a great actress and I somehow feel she shouldn't be limiting herself to these roles. [Meaning cutesey, romance type dramas/movies etc] She has so much potential but somehow, her star has never really shone. I'm really curious to find out how exactly the Korean people (both industry insiders and the public) perceive her. Any ideas? =)

how people perceive her... hmmm, it changes depending on age demographics. A lot of people my age (mid 20s) seem to like her a lot, while things with older and younger people might be a little more complicated.

As for the industry itself, she's near the top. Not a Son Ye-Jin or Im Soo-Jung yet, but she's shown she can handle tougher films and nothing she's done recently has really flopped, so she'll have a pretty nice future.

As for wasting her talent... well, she's extremely young. Not all actresses can be like Bae Doo-Na. She's wasting her time with things like 이죽사, but it's mostly done to keep her popularity. She's shown she can be good if needed, so if she continues to mix the highly commercial (Sad Movie, Beast and The Beauty) with the more eclectic (A Bittersweet Life) she'll be fine.

Yea, I was thinking of Ijuksa mainly when I typed that. The script was somewhat disappointing coming from Lee Kyung-Hee but that's another story. I guess on the bright side, for me she saved alot of what the her co-stars destroyed and kept me going on the drama.
Thanks for the insight though! I barely see any articles or interviews with her(just a smattering) so that was interesting to find out
