Spielberg's 1972 Olympic thriller gets a name

(Posted In Drama Film News USA and Canada )

Munich.jpgUniversal Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures announced yesterday that Steven Spielberg's next film, based on the 1972 massacre of 11 Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics, will be titled Munich. The film is set for release December 23, 2005.

Munich recounts the dramatic story of the secret Israeli squad assigned to track down and assassinate 11 Palestinians believed to have planned the 1972 Munich massacre -- and the personal toll this mission of revenge takes on the team and the man who led it. Inspired by actual events, the narrative is based on a number of sources, including the recollections of some who participated in the events themselves.

The film stars Eric Bana [Black Hawk Down] as the Mossad agent charged with leading the band of specialists brought together for this operation. He will be joined by Geoffrey Rush, Daniel Craig [Layer Cake], Mathieu Kassovitz [Amelie] among the notables.

My understanding is that for the longest time, and on some sites still, it was titled 'Untitled 1972 Munich Olympics Project' and given that it was only yesterday that they announced it officially i felt it worthy to note.

What incredibly inflammatory subject matter to be tackling in this day and age! I wonder if Spielberg has got his head screwed on right.
