BFI. 'Watch This!' Top 50 Film that Children Should Watch.

(Posted In Action Animation Asia Comedy Cult Documentary Drama Film News Random Geek Talk UK / Ireland / Australia / New Zealand USA and Canada )

BFIlogo.peg.jpgI saw this mentioned on the news this morning, the BFI (British Film Institute) top 50 films that children should watch. Not entirely the 'Top 50 films that children like watching' but a list compiled by adults (i think, but at least those with children) of what they think children should see. Dangerous path, as I am not sure how many families will survive enforced viewing of Francois Truffaut movies. Or many of the others for example. But there are many in there that are clearly well chosen.

A background and the Top 10 are online, as is the complete Top 50.

I liked the addition of Whale Rider and Kirikou the Sorcerer (curious that Todd was just recently commenting on that films overlooked status).

But The Bicycle Thief? I love that movie, and the themes are timeless, but would a 6 year old make it through that film?
Also, isn't RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK a bit violent for younger kids?...well, I guess I saw it when I was 6...)

There should have been more Miyazaki...but two films on the list isn't bad!

Overall a nice list that isn't affraid to stray from some of the expected choices...

Night of the Hunter!? That movie scared me enough when I first saw it at 15! For a kid, they would never want to see another Robert Mitchum movie again! (but it is an AWESOME film).

Hmm Show Me Love's other title is Fucking Amal. Not sure if kids would wanna see that!
(Never seen the movie itself)

A friend of mine had the commment that this list is in danger of actually being a 'parents' bragging rights list (look how artsy I am!) rather than being wholly appropriate for young children...I have to agree with him on some of the choices (Truffaut, Malle, De Sica, Lurhman, etc.)...but many choices are great ones (Kirikou!)

The good/bad thing about lists is that well they are never perfect, but always conversation starters.

SHOW ME LOVE is a great movie, but I don't think I'd show it to kids - maybe 15 year olds, but given its subject matter, hardly suitable for under 12s!
